Sweating the details is a bit of a rallying cry for designers. It's almost a badge, a stamp of authenticity for people who want to be good at product design.
For a long time that meant doing it in Figma, and going back and forth with developers over a fair amount of friction and time. You'd craft the screen, hand it over, wait, see what actually got built, then go round again.
The loop closed
Now the feedback loop between designer and agent is instant. It feels almost magical how fast you can sweat the details now. It's unlocked a level of detail that just wasn't practical to chase before.
Recently I was designing a daily working surface for a power-user group, tracking the lifecycle of hundreds of ongoing things across lots of data points, with multiple views into it at different levels. Notoriously the kind of thing that's hard to get right.
Having a tight feedback loop meant I could properly test the interactions as I built, more accurately and far faster than before. I don't think I caught anything I wouldn't eventually have caught the old way. Sticky rows, shortcuts, the little nice-to-haves, they'd have surfaced eventually. They just would have surfaced a lot later, probably after a few rounds of build and test, maybe even after release.
This time they showed up while I was still designing.
The badge isn't lost, it's earned differently
Here's the bit I wasn't expecting. I still love the exploration side of Figma, the open canvas, the moodboarding. That hasn't gone anywhere.
But the nitty-gritty, actually crafting the screen by hand, tweaking spacing, perfecting components inside Figma, has started to feel tedious in a way it never used to.
I think it's because I can feel how much faster the alternative is. Why sit there detail-crafting an entire screen in Figma when I can work in scrappy little pieces, prompt back and forth, and pull it straight back in with more fidelity than the static version ever had?
Static pages never represented the real thing perfectly anyway, and even the best Figma prototypes were always a bit janky.
But stepping away from the old way isn't free of guilt. It's easy to let the AI overwrite your decisions, filling in the gaps wherever you haven't said anything. If that's how you're working, something probably has been lost.
There's another version of that same guilt too. The speed you get, the kind I described in the table example, is dizzying enough on its own to make you feel like you've cheated. Like the craft got skipped and the AI just did the work for you.
But that's a choice, not a given. If you specify the exact styling you want for a piece, go back and forth on an animation or a transition timing five times until it actually feels right, that's still you sweating the details. You might not know the exact milliseconds or the exact bezier curve you landed on, but you crafted it. You didn't leave it to chance.
I don't think the badge of honour has gone. That's my opinion.
I think it has moved deeper into the process.
Less about painstakingly recreating a static version of the product, and more about having the time and proximity to make the real thing better. To test it, push it, and keep going until the details actually hold up.
The tools have changed, but the care hasn't. That's still sweating the details to me.
